Discover the major winners of the 95th Academy Awards 2023 held on March 12 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. Honoring the best films of 2022, presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS).
Introduction
▪ The Oscars, commonly referred to as the Academy Awards, are awards that recognize and honor exceptional artistic and technical achievements in the American film industry.
▪ They are widely considered one of the most prestigious and significant awards in the entertainment industry within the United States.
▪ Each year, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) presents awards to honor the cinematic accomplishments of primarily American films, as evaluated by the voting membership of the Academy.
Why Academy awards called Oscars?
▪ The Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars, got their nickname from American librarian and the Executive Director of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Margaret Herrick, who saw the statuette and said it looked like her Uncle Oscar. The name caught on and has been used ever since. The official name of the award is the Academy Award of Merit, and the statuette depicts a knight holding a crusader's sword and standing on a reel of film.
Academy Awards Statuette
▪ The winners in each category receive a golden statuette, officially known as the “Academy Award of Merit,” but commonly referred to as the “Oscar.”
▪ The statuette, featuring a knight depicted in the Art Deco style, was created by Los Angeles artist George Stanley based on a design sketch by art director Cedric Gibbons.

1st Academy Awards
▪ The inaugural Academy Awards were hosted in 1929 as a private dinner hosted by Douglas Fairbanks at The Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel.
▪ In 1930, the Academy Awards ceremony was broadcast on the radio for the first time, and it was televised for the first time in 1953.
▪ It is also the oldest of the four major annual American entertainment awards and has served as a model for other awards such as the Emmy Awards for television, the Tony Awards for theater, and the Grammy Awards for music.
▪ Since its inception in 1929, a total of 3,140 Oscar statuettes have been presented.
95th Academy Awards 2023 (Oscars 2023)
▪ The 95th Academy Awards were presented on March 12, 2023, in a ceremony hosted by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. The awards honored films released in the year 2022.
▪ ABC televised the event, which was produced by Ricky Kirshner and Glenn Weiss, with Weiss also serving as the director. Late-night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel hosted the show for the third time, following his previous hosting duties for the 89th and 90th editions of the ceremony in 2017 and 2018.
▪ The film Everything Everywhere All at Once was the night’s biggest winner, receiving seven awards, including Best Picture, out of its eleven nominations. All Quiet on the Western Front won four awards and The Whale was honored with two.
