Operation Polo
Recently, the 75th anniversary of Operation Polo (the code name of the ‘Police Action’ in Hyderabad) was observed, bringing back to light the historical event that shaped India’s post-independence integration.
Operation Polo, also known as the “police action” in Hyderabad, was a military operation launched by India on September 13, 1948, to annex the princely state of Hyderabad.
The operation was undertaken in response to the Nizam of Hyderabad’s refusal to accede to India after the country’s independence in 1947.
The Nizam, Mir Osman Ali Khan, had sought to maintain Hyderabad’s independence as a sovereign state, but India viewed this as a threat to its national security and unity.
The Nizam’s forces, known as the Razakars, were also accused of violence and atrocities against the Hindu population of Hyderabad.
The Indian Army, led by Major General J.N. Chaudhuri, swiftly entered Hyderabad and overpowered the Razakars. The Nizam surrendered on September 17, 1948, and Hyderabad was integrated into the Indian Union.
Operation Polo was a controversial event, with some criticizing India’s use of military force against Hyderabad.
However, the operation is generally seen as a necessary step in consolidating India’s independence and ensuring the safety of its citizens.
The 75th anniversary of Operation Polo serves as a reminder of this pivotal moment in Indian history.
