Largest Hockey Stadium in India

The Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium, located in Rourkela, Odisha, India, is an international field hockey arena and holds the record for being the largest fully seated hockey stadium in the world.

Named after Birsa Munda, a famous tribal leader and freedom fighter from Khunti, Jharkhand, this stadium has a seating capacity of 20,011 permanent seats.

It was officially recognized by the Guinness World Records on January 29, 2023, for this remarkable achievement.

History of Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium

During India’s bid to host the 2023 Men’s FIH Hockey World Cup, it became clear that a new hockey stadium was needed in Odisha.

The government allocated 15 acres of land for its construction, and the task was handed to the Odisha Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (IDCO).

The foundation stone for the stadium was laid in February 2021 by Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, and the construction was completed within 12 months. The stadium was inaugurated on January 5, 2023, by the Chief Minister himself.

Unlike other large hockey stadiums, which are part of multi-purpose complexes, the Birsa Munda Stadium was built exclusively for hockey matches, making it the largest all-seater hockey-specific stadium in the world.

Hockey World Cup 2023

The Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium was designed to host the 2023 Men’s FIH Hockey World Cup, marking the fourth time India hosted the event.

The tournament was held jointly in Rourkela and Bhubaneswar, with the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar serving as the second venue.

This was the second time Odisha hosted the World Cup, further highlighting the state’s growing importance in international hockey.
